Yolanda Mason Obituary

Yolanda was raised with love by her mother and stepfather, David Cox. As a child Yolanda attended Wichita Public schools, where she excelled in academics and track & field. She loved reading, writing poems, and journaling. In school she would often win the spelling bee and would have A’s in all her subjects. She loved being competitive in school often winning Book-A-Thon reading and Spelling Bee competitions. Yolanda had a love for dancing and the drill team as a teenager. Growing up, Yolanda’s aunts nicknamed her “Tinachi” for her small statue and strong spirit. Her brothers would brag on how strong and determined she was growing up; they said she had a warrior-like spirit. Yolanda was also very caring and nurturing. Growing up she would feed the neighborhood dogs and cats leaving them food and water. She also loved being the caretaker of the family dogs. Yolanda was the sweetest most thoughtful child to her family growing up.

Her mother Missionary Mae Cox was a faithful member of St Mark Church of God in Christ where she raised her children to love God and serve his will. As a young member of the church Yolanda loved to attend Sunday School, Youth Fellowship and participate in pageants. Into her adulthood Yolanda always professed her love of God and the church. She enjoyed reading her bible and writing down her favorite scriptures for encouragement. Yolanda would often attend her favorite uncle Edward’s church, Mt. Carmel COGIC. Her Aunt Dorcas would often pick her up to attend Sunday service, she looked forward to those car rides and fellowship. Up unto her passing Yolanda’s faith in God never waivered she believed until the end that God had a place for her in heaven with her mother, father and brothers. Her relationship with God grew stronger after the passing of her brother, Curtis Mason, she learned to lean and depend on prayer to get her through.

Yolanda was a proud mother of four children. She often claimed that her biggest accomplishment in her life was her children. In December of 1990 was the first time Yolanda felt that proud feeling, she became a mother for the first time, giving birth to her oldest daughter Leonestee Cherelle Anderson. Soon after in 1992, Yolanda gave birth to her first son, Markeece Antonio Floyd Anderson. In December of 1997 on her mother’s birthday, Yolanda gave birth to her youngest son, Demetrius Tyler (Mercedes Renae) Anderson. A couple of years later in 1999 Yolanda was blessed with her youngest daughter, Brittany Mae Anderson, named after her grandmother, Mae Cox.

As a  Mother Yolanda often encouraged her children by writing them letters, notes and cards. Yolanda found pride and comfort in expressing her feelings through writing and acts of kindness to her children. As a Grandmother Yolanda was a “rockstar”, she stole the attention of her grandchildren all the time by spoiling them with toys, candy and money. Yolanda was blessed to have three beautiful grandchildren: Anthony Garner III, Kennedee Golston (Leonestee) and Dedrin Anderson (Markeece). Yolanda loved to spend time with her grandchildren, during those visits she would love on them with lots of hugs and kisses. Yolanda loved to celebrate every holiday with her grandchildren, from New Year’s Day to Christmas. For example, the grandchildren always looked forward to receiving Valentine cards and candies, Easter baskets, Halloween costumes, and Christmas gifts. She loved to send her family cards for every birthday and holiday, especially her nieces and nephews. Yolanda loved to celebrate birthdays with her grandchildren, she enjoyed attending their parties. One would say that she was even more proud to be a grandmother just as much as she was being a mother.  Her grandchildren were beautiful reminders of her legacy that will continue for generations to come.

Yolanda was a natural comedian. She often would crack jokes on her family and loved ones. One would describe her as goofy, dancing around, and making up freestyle raps. She had her favorite sayings, “uh - yoo-hoo” and “On Everthang.” She enjoyed making the people around her laugh.

Life took Yolanda down many paths, but her loyalty, kindness, generosity and strength never wavered. No matter what life handed Yolanda she never stopped fighting, she never let go of her pride in herself, her faith and belief for better. Yolanda’s older brother Curtis Mason (deceased) was her best friend in life, she often referred to herself as his big little sister. Yolanda found companionship and partnership with Cecil Price, her relationship with him encouraged her to be the best version of herself for her family and loved ones.

Yolanda is proceeded in death by her mother Mae Helen Cox, her father Floyd Anderson, her brothers David Cox and Curtis Mason and her grandmother Minnie Mae Coleman.

Yolanda leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters Leonestee Cherelle Anderson and Brittany Mae Anderson, her sons Markeece Antonio Floyd Anderson and Demetrius Tyler (Mercedes Renae) Anderson. Her grandsons, Anthony Garner III and Dedrin Anderson. Her granddaughter Kennedee Mae Golston. Her sisters Patrice Mason and Monica Cox. Her brother Tracey Mason. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
